Helen V. Buhr

Helen V. Buhr, 80, of Sumner, died Thursday, January 9, 2013, at Unity Point Health-Allen Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 13, 2014, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. George Volkert officiating.  Interment will be at Lutheran Cemetery of Sumner Township.  Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, January 12th, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Monday. Memorials may be given to the family. 

Helen Viola Bell, daughter of Floyd and Gladys Mettlin, was born September 11, 1933 in Enid, Oklahoma. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bremer, Iowa. She received her education in the Lutheran Children’s Home in Waverly, Frederika Schools, and Sumner High School. On November 25, 1951, she was united in marriage with Kenneth Buhr at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sumner. Helen worked for many years at Koehring/Bantam in Waverly prior to retiring in 1995. She then began working at Meadowbrook Country Club in Sumner, where she remained until three years ago. Helen was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sumner. She enjoyed collecting porcelain dolls, crocheting, knitting, and reading.

In addition to her husband, Kenneth of Sumner, Helen is survived by eight children, Laurie (Jerry) Miller of Beaman, Jerry (Cathy) Buhr of Sumner, Leslie (Carol) Buhr of New Hampton, James Buhr of Coralville; Janet (Kenny) Hackman of New Hampton, Scott (Connie) Buhr of Sumner, Gary Buhr of Cedar Rapids, and Dawn Buhr of New Hampton; eighteen grandchildren; Michael (Jill) Stufflebeam, Wendy (Bill) Bertram, Chris (Mark) Hauser, Jackie Hauser, Shelly Sonderleiter, Ryan (Jennifer) Buhr, Jeremy (Sherri) Buhr, Luke (Jordan) Buhr, Chantel Buhr, Rezner Buhr, Joshua (Crystal) Culbertson, Dan (Anna) Culbertson, Kyle Hackman, Scott (Missy) Hackman, Paul Hackman, Alyssa Buhr, Weston Buhr, and Justin Rieks; and twenty-seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; foster parents, Walter and Martha Moeller; two grandsons, Dustin Buhr and Calum Ameling; one sister, Beverly Mettlin; two brothers, Lawrence and Jerry Mettlin; one son-in-law, John Culbertson; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Henry and Louise Buhr; sisters-in-law, Helen and Bernita Buhr; and brother-in-law, Leo Buhr.

Sincere thoughts and prayers for Kenny and family. Have known Helen for 50 yrs, back when she and Kenny were just starting their family.Then we were neighbors when I had my family and Dawn and my girls spent time together a lot. She will be missed greatly.
